What is Next Step Mentoring?

Peer parent mentors providing culturally responsive, trauma informed, client centered and family focused peer mentoring services to parents involved with ODHS Child Welfare.

What is a peer parent mentor?

Someone with lived experience as a parent and who has previously navigated the ODHS Child Welfare process and now provides support and guidance to parents who are currently navigating the process. Mentors practice and model a program of recovery. They are knowledgeable of the many pathways to recovery and they are trained and certified as recovery peer mentors.

What kind of support is offered?

Accompany parents to court hearings and family meetings.

Introduce parents to recovery meetings, support groups and other creative options to help increase one’s natural support system.

Provide encouragement, support and understanding as the parent navigates the Child Welfare system.

Help parents learn to advocate for themselves and their children.

Assist parents with access to community resources and treatment.

How are services provided?

Peer parent mentoring services will be provided by Next Step Mentoring mentors to parents who voluntarily agree to receive the service.  Referrals will be initiated by ODHS or the parent for peer parent mentoring services.

Who is eligible?

  1. Parents who have their children in their care and custody and who may be at risk for Child Welfare involvement.

  2. Parents who have their children in their care and ODHS has filed for temporary legal custody in a court of legal jurisdiction; or

  3. Parents who have had their children removed from their care and are in the temporary legal custody of ODHS.

To be eligible for peer parent mentoring services, parents must meet the following eligibility requirements prior to the provision of services.
